Tips To Ensure Proper Contact Lens Health and Hygiene

If you wear contact lenses then there are some steps you need to follow in order to prevent conjunctivitis (redness or swelling) or other symptoms that are caused by bacterial infections of the eye.
Basic contact lens hygiene is easy to follow and will help to keep your eye healthy.

You must wash and dry your hands thoroughly, at any time before putting contacts into your eyes. Hands should be lathered and scrubbed for thirty seconds under warm water.

You may accidentally drop the lens down the drain and do not install contacts over a bathroom sink as sinks are full of bacteria. Instead work over a table with a mirror and over a clean desk. Open your contact case one side at a time so that you can make sure you don’t accidentally get your lenses mixed up.

After the first lens in place, repeat the process for the second. Rinse the case with clean contact lens solution and dump any remaining solution down the drain.

Never touch the tip of the bottle of solution for contact lenses at all. The keep the bottle and contents sterile will help.

This is especially true if your contacts are in and while you should never rub your eyes. You could scratch the cornea of your eye and cause major damage. Contact lenses should be re-moistened with a solution of contact, never use water or saliva.

Watch your eyes for buildup of mucus like material. This is an symptom of problems from contact lenses so it should be taken out until the problem has cleared up. These give the eye time to heal and prevent contamination of the contact.

The contact lens case should be replaced every three months. Contacts should be replaced as directed by your doctor. Don’t try to wear contact lenses for longer than suggested by a physician.
