Vintage skateboards can be like artistic endeavors, which is probably why so many folks are starting to collect them these days. These days folk will often focus their collection around skateboards designed during a particular decade. Some folk may be partial to skateboards from the 1970s while others only collect those made in the 1980s or 1990s. Many skaters who have reached an age where they give up the sport decide to collect vintage skateboards as a past-time. While there is evidence of the utilization of home-made skateboards as early as the 1930s the 1st skateboards that are like the ones used today were developed just before the 1960s. These first skateboards were inspired by the California surf culture and marketed as a method to surf on land. Early vintage skateboards featured metal or clay wheels which were mounted onto lorries that would then be attached to a wooden board. Lots of the design elements we see on skateboards today came from the 1960s.

Some of the enhancements to these early designs included wider clay wheels and angled rails. One Canadian skateboard manufacturer was Super Skate. They commenced making the clay wheels employing a composite made of walnut shells. The design and color of the skateboards also became more significant as they became more favored. The boards and wheels started to have bold matching colo urs such as yellow and aqua. During the mid 1960s one of the largest developments was the arrival of fiberglass and composite decks.
