Metal stamping is the practice of cutting and forming the metal sheet into a required profile by means of tool labeled as metal stamping die. Metal stamping sheet pieces are in use all over the place. From the simple metal clips to complicated CPU harddisc parts are manufactured with the help of precision sheet metal stamping method.
Precision metal stamping die design is the preliminary stage in stamping tool manufacturing as soon as the part design is done. Die drawing stage is very important. A good stamping die design can generate highly precise stamped components that can run for long time without any repair. Stamping die design includes determining the required metal stamping operations, basic layout, manufacturing processes, kind of metal stamping presses to be used et cetera. A stamping die designer must have thorough know-how regarding these fundamentals to construct a high-quality die design. Computer aided design technology has developed very well in last decade to aid die designers. Next we are going to discuss the different procedures involved in precision metal stamping tooling designs. The first stage in stamping die design is the process of evaluating the metal part to be made for it’s properties, size and complexity of the shape. After that the designer will proceed with the strip-layout plan. He then calculates cutting force and the die-set to be used and starts making the assembly sketch. When the assembly sketch is complete it is time for detailed drawing of individual die parts and finishing step in the metal stamping die design is the preparation of bill of materials.
